Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service of Hutchins Library available to current Berea College faculty, staff, and students using their Berea College network login.  All other patrons will be referred to the Madison County Public Library.

We borrow materials that are not available in Hutchins Library or other Berea College departmental libraries for the educational, research, and general needs of the campus community.

If you want to borrow materials from other libraries, track the progress of those requests, and be able to receive articles electronically, you will need to have an Interlibrary Loan account.

If you are a first-time user, you will need to create an account using the "First Time Users: Create an Account" link below.

Before you place a request for a book through Interlibrary Loan, check to make sure that Hutchins doesn't already own it. To do so, click the link "Library Catalog (BANC)" below. Then search for the book by both author and title. If we do not own it, then proceed to request the book via Interlibrary Loan using the "Book Request Form (Interlibrary Loan)"

Patrons needing to borrow materials via interlibrary loan are assumed to have exhausted Hutchins Library and other departmental library resources. If so, loans are requested as follows:

  • Select Interlibrary Loan from the Hutchins Library homepage.
  • From the options on the left, select the appropriate request form.  Fill in and submit.
  • Keep in mind, requests for loans can take up to two weeks to arrive.

Patrons will be notified by email when borrowed material has arrived.

Any item on loan can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Items with due dates should also be returned to the Circulation Desk.

Keep in mind, the interlibrary loan should not be used for:

  • Duplicates of materials owned by Hutchins Library or any departmental libraries.
  • Required class materials (i.e. textbooks, reading lists) that are available at the Bookstore.
  • Materials to be placed on reserve.
  • Photocopy requests which violate copyright regulations (i.e. two articles from the same issue or more than 10% of a publication).

Costs for materials borrowed will be handled as follows:

  • Borrowing charges incurred for standard requests will be absorbed by the Library.
  • Overdue fines will be charged at the rate of $.50/day beginning the day after the material is due for every day the library is open until it is returned or the maximum charge of $10.00 is reached. College students, faculty, and staff can pay fines in cash or they will be charged through the College accounting office.
  • Costs for damaged or lost books (as determined by lending library or after 20 days overdue) will be paid by the requestor.

Limitations that are placed on the use of borrowed material by the lending library will be honored.

The length of the loan is determined by the lending library. Renewals must be requested at least 5 days before the due date.

Conditions of this service are governed by the National Library Code (adopted by the American Library Association), the Copyright Law, Title 17, U.S. Code, and special interlibrary loan agreements with consortia libraries.
